Marvel Universe Live: A Must-See Show For All Superheroes

20170728_195746

My son has been a fan of Marvel since his first love at age 2: Spiderman. That was the first costume which he wore everywhere. I have since proudly watched him expand his fan kid portfolio and fill his costume closet with the likes of other heroes like Captain America, Iron Man, Ant Man and he will soon ‘unlock’ his buddy, Guardians of the Galaxy’s Star Lord and his most recent request has been for a Deadpool costume (***NOTE: I have seen the movie for Deadpool & it is NOT kid-friendly! JJ has already been informed that he is not to see that movie until he’s 18.) 20170728_195746He has also recently was introduced to Lego Marvel Superheroes, a type of role playing game that you can even play with 2 players. You go on missions to defeat villain bosses and unlock heroes and villains alike along the way. You are able to play as your favorite characters using all their unique skills to save citizens, earn cash and fun stuff like drive cars or pilot sky vehicles, solve puzzles, dance a funny dance while waiting to move and of course, saving Marvel creator, Stan Lee from his vast array of peril scenarios. You can even customize your favorites so Spidey can be equipped with a Capt. America shield or a mash up of Sabretooth with Iron Man’s mask. This game is hours and hours of fun and like when my son was obsessed with superhero coloring books, he learned the names and logos and attacks of his favorite superheroes and defenses of their nemeses. I knew Marvel Universe Live would be a great way to watch superheroes 20170728_190817come to life!

I bought tickets just a few days before through the direct website for the venue hosting: UNLV Tickets. In Las Vegas, with so many options for performances, sports and activities, it is hard to choose which to attend! I have to say I highly recommend this show to anyone with kids remotely interested in superheroes. There are several stories that lead up to the main event each featuring your favorite teams of Marvel heroes, namely The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy. It is really hard to not find so much entertainment for kids of all ages with high flying aerialists, dirt bike demonstrations, fire dancers (think Polynesian poi ball spinners!), acrobatics, of course, the awesome superheroes in  their awesome uniforms! My soon to be Kindergarten aged kiddo recognized everyone he saw and was so excited watching them battle it out with those dastardly villains!20170728_201230

Doors open 1 hour before and knowing there would be lots of people parking, we arrived before the allotted time. As we made our way in, we were immediately greeted with all things Marvel! Cups, toys, posters, masks, you name it. We made our way past several tables on the way to our seats and decided on a cool noise-making blaster gun with the Marvel Universe Live logo and a sketch of a handful of Avengers on it. I thought about the money, knowing a lot can be inflated at events, but also, a lot of the items are exclusively available only at a show.

20170728_192212We didn’t know we got such great seats until we arrived. We asked the Events Staff to show us where our seats are and the kind man remarked, “Those are the best seats in the house! Enjoy!” Sure enough, we found out as we made our way down the stairs that we were seated in the front row! I couldn’t believe our luck! Sure, I bought the tickets for us, but in seeing the seating chart, I thought there would be several rows ahead of us all the way to the ground. For this specific show, the collapsible bleacher seats were pushed all the way back so that meant, front row for us! There were a lot of kids dressed up or wearing their favorite heroes garb and though I packed my son’s Ant Man costume, mask and gloves, he opted out since it was really hot out still. Even if you didn’t have or bring a costume, lots of people had fan shirts on or bought masks or shirts there. While we were seated, we bought cotton candy with a mask that J was able to pick out. He chose Spiderman – of course! FYI, cotton candy now costs $15/bag. O.M.G.

20170728_203738The show began promptly on time having generously provided a countdown of several minute intervals. The opening introduction showed Doctor Strange levitating toward the audience… Great visual effects with wiring and cables as well as just the right amount of pyrotechnics throughout the show made for a seamless transfer into the Marvel Universe… Actually, the presence of Doctor Strange made me curious and we were inspired to watch the movie later that night!

Without giving away the plot and outcome of the show, I have to say, it was a great performance that could be enjoyed by everyone in the family. With voice over technology you need not strain to hear or understand the characters. There were a lot of characteristic lines and mannerisms so you really got to see your favorite heroes in real life. The whole back drop is a massive changing screen that made the stage look even bigger and really set the scenes with ease. There is a brief intermission in between acts and the seat vendors make their way around again selling popcorn, cotton candy, lemonade, souvenirs, you name it! We managed to use the restrooms before hand with zero line, but maybe at intermission it was a different story. Even the lines to buy things were not very long given that there were tables and carts available every few steps. For parents and those over age 21, there was alcohol being served! I saw mostly beer stands, but I imagine they may have had wine options also. We were given a countdown to showtime once again and the next chapter began…

At the end, as they take their final vows, you are able to see so many characters lined up, facing the crowd, undoubtedly for photo opportunities. It was a really fun night and I hope you all get to take your superheroes in training to see this great show! Even exiting, traffic wasn’t bad at all. Tickets are reduced for children, full price for adults. This is a show experience your kids will talk about for months! I can’t believe my little managed to be engaged and seated for the whole show. The only 2 times he got a little antsy was waiting for the show to begin and for intermission to conclude!

Red Rock Lanes: Summerlin

fullsizeoutput_15c0

Whether it’s Christmas morning, New Years Eve or 2am on a Monday morning you will find Red Rock Lanes open for business. Located in the Red Rock Casino, the bowling alley features 72 bowling lanes, a game center, bar lounge and Pro-shop for the pro-Bowler in your family. Want to make it a date night or night out with the girls? Get down in one of their luxury VIP lanes and suites, complete with bar service and cozy seating arrangements!  Do I hear a “Mom’s Night” anyone?

IMG_4431

As an amateur bowler, myself, I will say that this was one of the most pristine, clean-smelling bowling alley’s I’ve ever been to and the food just happened to be tasty! The bathrooms were not only clean but pleasing to the eye, the full-service bar and lounge was a nice treat for the adults and the chicken nuggets and fries were a huge hit with all my picky eaters.

Toddlers with a show size under 11 can wear their own shoes!

If you’re not a great bowler, or your children need a little extra help, bumpers and ramps are a great way to keep the ball rollin! However, if you happen to arrive during peak hours, the ramps may be hard to come by. If this is the case, ask your neighbor in the next lane if you can share. Chances are, they are a nice family willing to do so. If not, don’t fret, the bumpers will be enough. My two-year old son pushed his own ball down the lane just fine and my four-year old ended up not wanting to use the ramp at all!

IMG_4455

The big screens play all your musical favorites from past to present! Warning! You will break out into dance at least once in front of your children.

My husband and I thought the prices weren’t bad for being the largest and most luxury bowling alley in Las Vegas at nearly $2-$3/ a game plus $4 for bowling shoes. Cosmic Bowling is only $5 a game on Fridays and Saturdays from 6pm-2am. The prices for food and drink were what’s to be expected in a Las Vegas Casino, but well worth it as the food was delicious and the cocktails were on point. Have a picky eater? Step out into the Casino and find an array of different food options including fine dining and buffet!

Whether you’re planning a date, birthday party, girls night out, family event or just want to escape the heat, Red Rock Lanes in the Red Rock Casino have what you need to experience the best of what Vegas has to offer!

A Very Terry Christmas {Show Review} Terry Fator Is Fun For All Ages

2016-12-01-02-05-03-636

We had an absolute blast attending A Very Terry Christmas at the Terry Fator Theater at Mirage. We received tickets to attend the show so I am able to report back to all of you! Perhaps you caught some of the highlights of our evening on Instagram stories, so now here is the play by play of our evening because you need to check out this limited engagement show and you can bring everyone. You may remember Terry Fator as the America’s Got Talent season 2 champ. The prize was a million dollars and his own show right here in Las Vegas. Who knew ventriloquism would be a hit with today’s audiences?!

I have a neat connection to this man so if you will indulge me for a moment as I harken back…

This is a Christmas show (& God Bless Terry Fator for bringing back the “Christmas” to our Happy Holidays! Ha!) with performances through December 22, 2016. From Monday through Thursday and select Saturdays, you and your family can enjoy 7:30p performances running approximately 90 minutes.

I ended up taking my 4 year old son as my plus 1 and he loved it – We both did! We parked in the garage on the 4th floor so we could walk directly across the outdoor bridge. Don’t forget to use your Nevada ID for free Strip parking! Just follow the signs to snake your way through the festively decorated lobby and atrium through some shops to the theater. I am always hesitant to bring children into casinos as I am not a fan of subjecting them to smoke and drunk people, but this was not bad at all! There was actually some conference folks who seemed to be streaming out of a late session so it was particularly G-rated. The box office is located in the hallway before the Terry Fator Theater and we got there around 6p – about an hour before the doors open (7p). This made ticket pick up super easy since there was no line. We had plenty of time to grab a bite at a little café called Roasted Bean just steps from the theater. Pro Tip: Blizz Frozen Yogurt is across the way so you can grab dessert afterwards too!

There are drinks available for purchase in the lobby, so you can fuel up before heading in. You will show your tickets to the ticket scanning staff members who greet you at the bottom of the escalators and then it is up to the theater entrance. It is a grand room and it already felt like we were at a party! There was Christmas music playing right when we arrived and as we made our way down the steps to our assigned seats, Rockin’ Around the

Mirage Hotel Lobby Christmas Trees

Christmas Tree was on and JJ immediately squealed which made me then realized it was his favorite song playing (he has been practicing for his Christmas show!) As we reached our row, I was informed that I could ask for a booster seat for my son. He was telling me he was OK, he liked his seat how it was, but when the usher brought us a red velvet covered foam cushion that blended perfectly with the seats, and it gave him a better view, he was super excited and happily complied! The DJ, show opener, Ben Harris was hilarious and kept everyone excited and cheering and clapping. He has an awesome ‘evolution of dance’ number to ramp things up and the crowd got super hyped up just as our headliner host was about to arrive. The couple in front of us seemed to have had their fair share of adult slushies from the lobby and they were extra interactive, which I loved! I actually felt a wave of calm come over me. I always tense up when I take JJ to places we have never been since I cannot predict how he is going to react. He did great and I know it was because of such a relaxed, informal atmosphere.

There was plenty to look at with lots of light changes, upbeat holiday sounds, a comfortable atmosphere as dictated by our gracious host, Terry Fator… His lovely wife of one year is his assistant on stage and the DJ, Ben Harris is a great dancer, comic and helper too. The band really completes the set and despite being in the 6th row, I did not find myself needing ear plugs and not once did my son remark that it was too loud. I honestly felt like we had the best seats because we were close, but not craning our necks and we could see both jumbo monitors if we really wanted an up close feel. The screens across the back of the stage are constantly changing with scenes to compliment what’s going on in the show or to accent songs. A new stocking is hung each time a new guest arrives.

Now for the main event… Terry Fator is simply the most talented entertainer I have ever seen. He sings, he does spot on, goose-bump activating impressions AND he is a brilliant ventriloquist. There is some adult humor, but he never uses foul language and even his jokes are perfectly framed so as to go right over the heads of unintended audience members. It is absolutely fantastic and I cannot rave enough about his show. Granted, I was a fan before, I have not seen his non-seasonal show yet (because I’m a local and that is what we do!) If you are a fan of holiday music, you must see this show. I am definitely making this a tradition every year from now on, because this was the perfect way to get in the Christmas spirit immediately following my favorite holiday eat fest! I love classic Christmas music and just getting to see this incredible talent live is absolutely worth it. Depending on your age and your affinity to Christmas music (ahem, I know for a fact some of you listen BEFORE Halloween!), you will, at the least, recognize 90% of the music. When I say this is a show for all ages, I mean, all ages! Now, I did bring a 4 year old and you know your kids best – 90 minutes is the length of the typical kid movie, but the lights, the music, the puppets will dazzle them. JJ got a little restless towards the end, but he held on! Our favorites are Winston the Turtle and Emma Taylor (because I’ve met her before!), but you will also get to see the world’s greatest Elvis impersonator, the annoying neighbor and a few surprise guests too!

2016-12-01-02-05-03-636Terry is just insanely talented. He can impersonate anyone – Kermit the Frog, Michael Jackson, Elvis, Cher, Louie Armstrong, Tony Bennett, Aaron Neville, Eartha Kitt, Karen Carpenter, Bing Crosby, David Bowie (SWOON!), you name it! His band of characters are so different and his vocal range is every inch of the spectrum – truly awe-inspiring! I found myself singing along with so many songs and I felt like we were hanging out with friends. Such a great night all around. I look forward to taking my parents, other moms and more kids to this show as it will be a hit with anyone, even the Grinch! *wink-wink*

Another very important aspect of his show is that he takes time to acknowledge and thank veterans in the audience as well as first responders and officers. At the close of the show, he explains his passion for supporting military families, giving back to say Thanks:

Terry donates 100% of the profit he receives from sales of his merchandise to military charities.  The primary charities include wonderful organizations such as The Airpower Foundation and Snowball Express. –terryfator.com

Buy tickets to A Very Terry Christmas starting at $60 plus tax and fees and a VIP experience for $150

The VIP experience includes premium seating, an autographed photo, a souvenir program and a complimentary drink. (The slushies actually look gigantic! We’re talking bigger than a pint glass…maybe 24 oz?!)

Again, really no bad seats in the house and this is a must-see show! Please tag us when you attend – we would love to see your pictures! #lvmsentus @vegasmomsblog on Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat

Halloween Tutu Tutorial

image8

Hello mamas and happy fall! I seriously love this time of year. The weather is finally starting to cool down and best of all…. Halloween is right around the corner! I mean what’s not to love? You get to carve pumpkins, dress up, and eat a bucket full of candy. Amazing. This Halloween is super special for me because we recently welcomed a beautiful baby girl to our family. My son has been talking nonstop about taking her trick-or-treating and finding her a costume. G decided that he and his daddy were going to be Power Rangers. As for me and baby E, he wanted us to be something else. Although I think I would have been an amazing Pink Ranger, I agreed. It ended up being an easy decision. Before baby E was born we bought her an adorable Minnie Mouse dress that I absolutely love. Who better to go with Minnie Mouse than her BFF Daisy Duck. image9I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a costume so I decided to make one. A quick Pinterest search later and I had a plan. The costume consists of a white tutu, a purple shirt, and a pink bow. I had the shirt and bought the bow and supplies for the tutu.

Here’s what you need:image2
Tulle (I used 3 spools)
Elastic band
Needle & thread
Scissors

First thing you need to do is measure the elastic. Make sure it’s snug around your waist.

When you have your elastic measured, simply sew it together.

Now onto the tulle. From what I gathered during my tutu making research, the average length for the skirt is between 10 to 12 inches. Now you can measure and cut the tulle one piece at a time, but who has time for that?image4

Here’s an easier way to do it:

First find a piece of cardboard and cut it double the length of your tutu. Since I wanted the length of my tutu to be around 12 inches long, the cardboard was cut 24 inches long.

Next, tightly wrap the tulle around the cardboard. Once you’re done, take your scissors and cut it on one end. Then, grab all your tulle, fold it in half, and cut it down the middle. Repeat with at least 2 more spools.

Now we are ready to start tying.

Take your elastic piece and put it around something sturdy. I used my dining room chair. Next take a piece of your tulle and fold it in half. This will be the length of your tutu.image6

Now take the tails of the tulle and pull them over the elastic and through the loop and gently tighten to form a knot. Repeat until your tutu is nice and full.

Remember the elastic will stretch so make sure you pack on the tulle. I ended up only needing three spools, but you really can use as much as you want. It will just make your tutu even fluffier.image7

I think this project could be done within a couple hours with no interruptions, but with an infant and a toddler it took me a couple days.

With all the supplies, plus a pink bow, the total cost of my costume was less than $10. Look for coupons and sales.

Here’s the final product. What do you think? My little sidekick is cute too.

The Snacks That Give Back

Thanks to HouseParty I had the opportunity to learn more about Box Tops. Timg_4193o be honest I really never paid too much attention to them partially because I didn’t have a child in school yet. Now that my little one started school, I thought this party would be a perfect way to learn more about it. I am so grateful that I was chosen to participate, it gave me an opportunity to educate myself about the importance of Box Tops.

First off, I have to commend General Mills for creating a program that was designed to give back to our schools. They created the program to support education and benefit American schools. The program was doing so well that they expanded and included other brands such as Pillsbury, Old El Paso and Green Giant. As the program proved to be such a huge successful that they decided to add non-food brands to the program such as Ziplock, Hefty, Kleenex and Scott products. All of these expansions gave schools more opportunities to earn money while boosting sales of participating products. It is really a win-win for both schools and General Mills. Hopefully, they will continue to expand the list to add more brands. The more the merrier!

http://www.boxtops4education.com/earn/participating-products

img_4200-1The next time you are browsing the store and can’t decide which brands to buy, maybe Box Tops will be the tie breaker. If you do purchase a Box Tops item, remember to clip it and set it aside. It’s as easy as 123! I get it, it’s really easy to forget but hey it’s okay! Whenever you remember to do so, save the Box Tops and eventually you will develop a habit. Maybe initially you will see it as a hassle, a waste of time, but don’t be discouraged. Donating Box Tops is like donating money to schools without breaking your bank account. They may only be worth ten cents, but eventually that ten cents becomes fifty cents, then a dollar and so on, those dollars and cents add up quickly. Think about every student bringing in a dollar each week or month, it adds up quickly!

Education is the key to our children’s future as well as ours, so why not help your local schools buy the things they need: books, computers, playground equipment and more. Be a part of a great cause, help improve our education system. Will you take that pledge? Will you help make a difference in children’s lives? Will you help make our future a little brighter? I know I will!

Meet Our Writers: Barb Meets Las Vegas

I moved to Las Vegas in the mid-1990s, because my husband had a great job offer. Stepping off the plane well after midnight in July, it felt like a giant blow dryer was in operation.

My first thought? We’re moving to hell!

Fast forward a couple of decades, a couple of sons, several pets, and a few career fields. I am no longer fazed by 115° days, slot machines in the grocery stores, or the lack of lakes (native Minnesotan here). I publicly chuckle at all the people who think 60° is freezing – as I surreptitiously put on an extra sweater.

Apparently, somewhere between Honeymoon in Vegas and The Hangover, I became a local.

______________________________________

Barb and LarryWhen I worked at resorts on the Las Vegas Strip, visitors would ask: “Do you live here?” I buried the urge to answer, “No, I commute daily from LA.”

Yes, people live in Las Vegas. Normal people. You might have a different opinion if you spent some time in my home, but humor me, please.

We have schools and parks. Grocery stores and veterinarians.

No, I do not live in a casino, and no, I do not eat at Mario Batali’s restaurants every day. But I do get out and about, so here are five of my favorite local places. Most are family-friendly. All make me smile.

1. Luv-It Frozen Custard.
This family-owned business has been scooping deliciousness for generations. There is no seating available, but you will be so enamored with your custard you won’t even notice.
505 E Oakey Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89104  (702) 384-6452

2. Roos-N-More Zoo
Roos-N-More is not currently able to host visitors at their home near Moapa. However, they can bring animals to you, or look for them at local public events. Lemurs, a Capuchin monkey, and a kangaroo joey are just some of the possibilities. For some inexplicable reason, the Caphucin monkey is inseparable from his otter friend. Squee!
746 Snowden Ranch Rd, Moapa, NV 89025     (702) 467-3585

3. Rocket Fizz
Even if you aren’t a candy or soda fanatic, Rocket Fizz will make you wax nostalgic for your childhood. With such a large variety of sweet treats, make sure to allow enough time to browse.
9410 W. Sahara Ave. #120, Las Vegas, NV 89117     (702) 889-4292
8878 S. Eastern Ave., #102,

Pick your own ripe, seasonal produce. We picked a ton o’ garden-fresh tomatoes last season, which made my husband so happy he almost cried.

5. Peppermill Fireside Lounge
Brass? Neon? A firepit that combines fire and water? Yes, please. Classic Vegas all the way. This is a great place to have a cocktail with your honey while you pretend you are on your way to see the Rat Pack perform.

Family to Family Connection Offers Information and Community

Girl Playing With Building Blocks

Girl Playing With Building BlocksRaising young children can be an isolating experience. It is often difficult for families to find credible information about child development and parenting. Also, it can be challenging – particularly in a transient city like Las Vegas – for moms to create strong support networks. Family to Family Connection is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to families with children ages 0-5 years. Their mission statement: “Through parent education and community networking, Family to Family empowers and supports families to provide a safe and nurturing environment for their children.” With a full roster of classes, a resource library, and a lactation educator on staff, new parents have a place to learn about being even better parents. The resource library allows the checkout of books and DVDs featuring subjects such as parenting and child development. Family to Family teaches a full calendar of classes. Most are taught in English, but there are some Spanish language classes each month, too. Topics include music, nutrition, physical activity, crafts, and even infant massage. Check here for the most up-to-date offerings. (Full disclosure – I occasionally lead a class about having a healthy relationship with food.) Family to Family has also teamed up with Nevada Early Intervention Services to offer some classes addressing your child’s development. Beyond the formal programming, one of the biggest strengths of Family to Family Connection is that it provides a space for young families to connect with one another. Friendships develop among the families served. When my boys were babies, Family to Family Connection was a lifesaver! There weren’t many places where I could bring both children and still feel relaxed and comfortable. Family to Family was welcoming. I could actually talk to other moms (yay!) while my children played safely. My new-mom jitters calmed down as I learned from the classes, and I was eternally grateful for a place to escape cabin fever. Each spring, Family to Family Connection presents the fundraiser “Touch a Truck.” As the name indicates, children have the chance to see a large variety of vehicles up close. They get to climb into a fire truck, touch an Army jeep, and even chillax in a limousine (my kids’ favorite – and so quintessential Vegas).
