The Snacks That Give Back

Thanks to HouseParty I had the opportunity to learn more about Box Tops. Timg_4193o be honest I really never paid too much attention to them partially because I didn’t have a child in school yet. Now that my little one started school, I thought this party would be a perfect way to learn more about it. I am so grateful that I was chosen to participate, it gave me an opportunity to educate myself about the importance of Box Tops.

First off, I have to commend General Mills for creating a program that was designed to give back to our schools. They created the program to support education and benefit American schools. The program was doing so well that they expanded and included other brands such as Pillsbury, Old El Paso and Green Giant. As the program proved to be such a huge successful that they decided to add non-food brands to the program such as Ziplock, Hefty, Kleenex and Scott products. All of these expansions gave schools more opportunities to earn money while boosting sales of participating products. It is really a win-win for both schools and General Mills. Hopefully, they will continue to expand the list to add more brands. The more the merrier!

img_4200-1The next time you are browsing the store and can’t decide which brands to buy, maybe Box Tops will be the tie breaker. If you do purchase a Box Tops item, remember to clip it and set it aside. It’s as easy as 123! I get it, it’s really easy to forget but hey it’s okay! Whenever you remember to do so, save the Box Tops and eventually you will develop a habit. Maybe initially you will see it as a hassle, a waste of time, but don’t be discouraged. Donating Box Tops is like donating money to schools without breaking your bank account. They may only be worth ten cents, but eventually that ten cents becomes fifty cents, then a dollar and so on, those dollars and cents add up quickly. Think about every student bringing in a dollar each week or month, it adds up quickly!

Education is the key to our children’s future as well as ours, so why not help your local schools buy the things they need: books, computers, playground equipment and more. Be a part of a great cause, help improve our education system. Will you take that pledge? Will you help make a difference in children’s lives? Will you help make our future a little brighter? I know I will!

9th Bridge School: Redefining the Experience of School

My son and I had the opportunity to visit fabulous Downtown Las Vegas to tour 9th Bridge School. As you can imagine, as an element of the Downtown Project, the minds behind this new breed of school are innovative, compassionate, eco-friendly and happiness-focused. They are successful entrepreneurs who are thinking outside the box and they will teach our children these key elements to being successful and fulfilled (& therefore, Happy!) in all areas of life. Let’s be honest: if we have to be away from our babies 5 days every week, how would you like to know they are spending their time learning to be thriving human beings creating, solving problems and making a difference? All the while, they realize there is a social/emotional factor to their world as well. Yes, please! Sign us up! What better way to prepare for the real world than to start from the very earliest stages by helping develop practical skills they will use throughout their lives?!

The school is state of the art with security systems in place and a very safe, cozy feel. In addition to the expected subjects, the curriculum includes art, music, physical health and sustainability. Each classroom has roll-up garage doors to bring in the world. I am certain every mom and dad can attest to the amount of time spent staring out the windows, wishing to be outside and counting minutes until the next break. There is a constant supply of fresh air, natural light with plenty of shade and again, an enclosed courtyard of privacy. It is the perfect marriage of education with the best perks of play! 9th Bridge has core values that make their approach such that a practical application of each value is incorporated in play and creation: Making foods that are healthy and taste good, gardening, recycling and re-purposing as a way of life, not something done on the side or when it’s convenient. There are large small group activities and different modes of learning are incorporated – tactile, visual, auditory. This is what they mean by preparing them for the real world. 9th Bridge is overall a well-rounded experience that challenges the way we, their parents most likely experienced our own education.

Every aspect of the experience has been acknowledged, addressed and included in a tangible and transparent manner. One of my favorite aspects is that the experience includes the entire family. Parents can even peer into the classroom via observation nooks included in the design of the building. Every morning, the community is invited to spend time together before parting ways. Having time set aside to transition your young student into his or her educational day makes for a calm, stress-free day for both parents and children. The fact that there is a space dedicated for this as well as a community room open to parents means being a part of your child’s education is not only allowed but encouraged.

Schedule your tour today and see for yourself! For our readers, just mention “9thBridge2014” through January 15, 2015 to waive application fees. There are payment plan options, referral bonuses and even scholarships available! 9th Bridge School is accepting applications for their infant, toddler, pre-K and Kindergarten programs. Part time options are also available for toddlers and pre-K children. Snacks and Lunch are provided as well and allergies are taken very seriously. When you visit, tell them Las Vegas Moms Blog sent you and then come back and tell us what you think!

Family to Family Connection Offers Information and Community

Girl Playing With Building Blocks

Girl Playing With Building BlocksRaising young children can be an isolating experience. It is often difficult for families to find credible information about child development and parenting. Also, it can be challenging – particularly in a transient city like Las Vegas – for moms to create strong support networks. Family to Family Connection is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to families with children ages 0-5 years. Their mission statement: “Through parent education and community networking, Family to Family empowers and supports families to provide a safe and nurturing environment for their children.” With a full roster of classes, a resource library, and a lactation educator on staff, new parents have a place to learn about being even better parents. The resource library allows the checkout of books and DVDs featuring subjects such as parenting and child development. Family to Family teaches a full calendar of classes. Most are taught in English, but there are some Spanish language classes each month, too. Topics include music, nutrition, physical activity, crafts, and even infant massage. Check here for the most up-to-date offerings. (Full disclosure – I occasionally lead a class about having a healthy relationship with food.) Family to Family has also teamed up with Nevada Early Intervention Services to offer some classes addressing your child’s development. Beyond the formal programming, one of the biggest strengths of Family to Family Connection is that it provides a space for young families to connect with one another. Friendships develop among the families served. When my boys were babies, Family to Family Connection was a lifesaver! There weren’t many places where I could bring both children and still feel relaxed and comfortable. Family to Family was welcoming. I could actually talk to other moms (yay!) while my children played safely. My new-mom jitters calmed down as I learned from the classes, and I was eternally grateful for a place to escape cabin fever. Each spring, Family to Family Connection presents the fundraiser “Touch a Truck.” As the name indicates, children have the chance to see a large variety of vehicles up close. They get to climb into a fire truck, touch an Army jeep, and even chillax in a limousine (my kids’ favorite – and so quintessential Vegas).

Well Rounded Momma Supports Moms-to-Be

Sleeping Newborn

Throughout pregnancy and childbirth preparations, women experience lots of different feelings: excitement, happiness, and love, for sure. But they may also feel nervous and confused. It’s a huge responsibility to bring a new life into the world, and there’s so much to learn aboutSleeping Newborn the birth process. First-time moms especially have tons of questions, and it can be difficult to find answers.

Do you want to have an OB/Gyn working with you, or midwife? Hospital birth, or home birth? A repeat Cesarean section or VBAC (vaginal birth after C-section)? And what the heck is a Labor Doula?

That’s where Well Rounded Momma (WRM) comes in. Founded in 2007 by Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) Sherry Hopkins, WRM provides pregnancy, birth and postpartum support. It is devoted to helping women know the choices available to them.

Couple Holding Infant ShoesWell Rounded Momma provides Midwifery and Doula services. Never heard of a Labor Doula? It is a trained birth professional who assists women through their birth experience by providing information as well as physical and emotional support. A Doula meets with you once or twice during pregnancy and is with you during labor, delivery, and shortly after birth to help with breastfeeding.

Childbirth education, fitness classes, support groups, workshops, massage therapy, and even Reiki are also offered. The storefront stocks herbs, teas, natural skincare products, and other goodies. All of these options help women have healthy pregnancies and labor, fewer C-sections, smoother breastfeeding, and increased bonding between mom and baby. It is part of WRM’s mission to use evidence-based care, so you’re in good hands.Want to learn more? Well Rounded Momma hosts an open house the last Friday of each month from 7-9 pm. This is a great opportunity to meet Sherry and the other providers. Get your questions answered and learn about something new. When I visited a WRM open house, Labor Doula Sarah Sorvillo taught hands-on techniques to help a laboring mom feel more comfortable. Learn about your options for a calmer, more peaceful birth experience.
