Annihilation

New Movie Alert, I’ve been seeing a few trailers circulating on Facebook and couldn’t help but be intrigued.  I was a bit fascinated with this new sci-fi and did a little research. The movie is based on acclaimed best-selling Southern Reach by Jeff VanderMeer’s 2014 award-winning trilogy of novels, starting with Annihilation.

ANN_Dom_Online_Unrated_Vertical_Cast_2018Synopsis
Lena, a biologist, and former soldier joins a mission to uncover what happened to her husband inside Area X – a sinister and mysterious phenomenon that is expanding across the American coastline. Once inside, the expedition discovers a world of mutated landscape and creatures, as dangerous as it is beautiful, that threatens both their lives and their sanity.
From visionary writer and director Alex Garland (Ex Machina, 28 Days Later) and based on the acclaimed best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer, Annihilation stars Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez and Tuva Novotny.

After watching the trailers I have definitely deemed this as a movie experience I can’t miss.  It has too many exciting and beautiful elements that cannot go unnoticed.  Have you seen the Beautiful Shimmer and creatures that relic in the trailers?  In honor of the New Movie Annihilation, I thought it would be fun to enclosed a recipe that would be the perfect food for venturing into the unknown (The Shimmer), something quick, easy, and a non-perishable food.  Thanks to Baking-Ginger I was able to find a simple yet tasty recipe. It has all the perfect elements to keep one from going famish.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Rolled Oats (use gluten-free if GF)
  • 1 Cup Peanut Butter
  • 1/2 Cup Choc-Chips (preferably dark chocolate or cocoa nibs if vegan)
  • 1 tbsp Chia Seeds
  • 1/4 Cup Honey/Agave Nectar
  • Instructions
  1. Mix all the ingredients together.
  2. Roll ingredients into balls.
  3. Store in an airtight container in the fridge.
  4. Devour

*We would love to hear what you type of food you would bring with you if you had to venture into the unknown*

Christmas Town For a Fun Family Night

We love finding places around the Valley to celebrate Christmas and the end of the year holidays. Following a short break after Halloweenville, Wet N Wild now hosts another off season family fun center – This time, Las Vegas Christmas Town! They are open thru New Year’s Eve and will only be closed 12/24 & 12/25 in observance of Christmas Eve and Day.

The second you step in, you are immersed in a winter wonderland with festive music, tons of colorful lights and all things that evoke Christmas and the holidays. You can even catch a few of your favorite winter characters like Olaf, elves and even Santa himself! Santa has a cottage so you can visit and take photos with him. There is no charge to use your own phone for photos, but professional photos are available for purchase. Tons of photo opportunities throughout the park with thousands of lights, a 40 person train ride, a 40 foot tree and synchronized lights and music. There is even a life-sized nativity scene! I just wish it was lit properly because it was pretty cool…

A few things to remember before your visit:

The ticket window opens at 5p. If you purchase a Groupon ($15 vs the full $20) You should be able to go straight to the entrance. Bags are subject to security search upon entry.

It is getting colder and colder as the year comes to a close so please dress warmly, including hats and gloves as this entire experience is outdoors.

They have face painting included with your admission and the artist that night did such a great job with my son’s snowman and wreath. I liked it so much I was inspired to tip her.

We did not enjoy the skating rink since it is not real ice, it is about the size of half of a basketball court, so it got crowded  and we could not get used to the ill-fitting skates! We tried about three different pairs on my son, including some that looked similar to roller blades. He did not like any of them. We only went around one time, but we enjoyed watching others try it out!

The lines for the rides can take a little while so just be patient, everyone else is here to have fun too, and at least you can look around and appreciate all the decorations and of course, the music!

Frosty’s Snow Ball Fun is a hybrid bounce house-ball pit of all snowballs. So cute…The kids always love the bounce houses and we could have spent the entire night just there, but I am glad we didn’t miss out on a number of other attractions.

The only thing we wanted from the concession stand was hot chocolate and the seasonal funnel cake: mint chocolate chip. The gigantic, drizzled in chocolate marshmallows in my hot chocolate were perfect. Making the kids ice cream and funnel cake induced sugar high was probably not the best idea, but it kept them warm and fueled to run through the obstacle courses for about an hour.

The Jingle Bell Sledding Hill is super steep and extremely fast, which my son does not like, so we did not try it, but the music is always on point there and from all the squealing and giggles, you know everyone is having a blast!

Right beside the inner tube sledding, there is a walk-through 3D experience that was really cute. The little kids liked it so much (or wanted to put the 3D glasses on repeatedly) that we went through several times since there is no line. As you exit the short two-room attraction, you can see the snow falls right by there!

My favorite was Rudolph’s Save Christmas Shoot Out, the paintball gallery. We almost forgot to try it and just before closing, we spent the last 30 min there. This requires purchase of paintballs, the best value being $20 for 200 paintballs. I will gladly buy them the next time we go – I want to shoot too! My son used all 100 paintballs himself and had a blast with every shot. The shooting gallery has Christmas trees lined up with ornaments to shoot and a well-padded (I hope) character creeping and laughing as you attempt to shoot him or her.

Ornament and cookie decorating requires additional purchase of ornaments and cookies, but all the decorating tools are available on tables beside the concession stand. I did not feel like standing in line for cookies so we tried the ornament decorating ($3). It is so cold out that it was hard to dry the glitter glue so I had to hold them all night – a terrible idea for the beginning of the night! They are cute little wood board ornaments, but we would likely skip that next time. We love the Tiny Tim train that is most suitable for five years and younger, but adults can squeeze in too.

The wave pool is so pretty and still, like a winter lake view. I loved the cabanas decorated in spooky, horror scenes for Halloweenville and I was really hoping they would have made a little winter wonderland near the pool too. I kept thinking it would be similar to the Macy’s department store windows in NYC.

As for the price point, I thought $20 per person seemed expensive (depending on how many people in your family) so I was glad to hear Groupon was available for $15. It did sell out that night we went so plan ahead! Overall, it is a great place if you love bounce houses, trains, holiday music and tons of lights. The rest is gravy!

Found a Diamond in the Desert!!!

We recently had the pleasure of dealing with Blue Diamond Air Solutions when we realized our HVAC air filters were in need of replacement.

From the moment they arrived they were very kind and professional.  They worked quickly to pull the old, dirty filters out, clean the cover, degrease the air intake vent and finally place the new filters.  I was surprised at how instant and noticeable the increased airflow through each vent was.  They also explained the many benefits of keeping a clean filter, including much cleaner air to breathe and reduction in energy costs due to higher efficiency of the increased airflow.  Being the mother of a child with allergies, the cleaner air is a HUGE benefit and a relief to me.  Our son even got a kick out of the installation, saying it looked like we had a ghostbuster in our house!

"Who you gonna call?"

“Who you gonna call?”

They recommend changing the filters quarterly or if there are pets in the home, bi-monthly.  The overall cost for us would only be $30 each time! ($5 per filter and a $20 service fee).  BDAS has been in business for a little over six months but they were very knowledgeable and were able to answer any questions I had for them.  I would highly recommend them to anyone I know. Red Rock Lanes: Summerlin

fullsizeoutput_15c0

Whether it’s Christmas morning, New Years Eve or 2am on a Monday morning you will find Red Rock Lanes open for business. Located in the Red Rock Casino, the bowling alley features 72 bowling lanes, a game center, bar lounge and Pro-shop for the pro-Bowler in your family. Want to make it a date night or night out with the girls? Get down in one of their luxury VIP lanes and suites, complete with bar service and cozy seating arrangements!  Do I hear a “Mom’s Night” anyone?

IMG_4431

As an amateur bowler, myself, I will say that this was one of the most pristine, clean-smelling bowling alley’s I’ve ever been to and the food just happened to be tasty! The bathrooms were not only clean but pleasing to the eye, the full-service bar and lounge was a nice treat for the adults and the chicken nuggets and fries were a huge hit with all my picky eaters.

If you’re not a great bowler, or your children need a little extra help, bumpers and ramps are a great way to keep the ball rollin! However, if you happen to arrive during peak hours, the ramps may be hard to come by. If this is the case, ask your neighbor in the next lane if you can share. Chances are, they are a nice family willing to do so. If not, don’t fret, the bumpers will be enough. My two-year old son pushed his own ball down the lane just fine and my four-year old ended up not wanting to use the ramp at all!

IMG_4455

The big screens play all your musical favorites from past to present! Warning! You will break out into dance at least once in front of your children.

My husband and I thought the prices weren’t bad for being the largest and most luxury bowling alley in Las Vegas at nearly $2-$3/ a game plus $4 for bowling shoes. Cosmic Bowling is only $5 a game on Fridays and Saturdays from 6pm-2am. The prices for food and drink were what’s to be expected in a Las Vegas Casino, but well worth it as the food was delicious and the cocktails were on point. Have a picky eater? Step out into the Casino and find an array of different food options including fine dining and buffet!

Whether you’re planning a date, birthday party, girls night out, family event or just want to escape the heat, Red Rock Lanes in the Red Rock Casino have what you need to experience the best of what Vegas has to offer!

Hemenway Valley Park: Where wildlife meets playtime

IMG_0084

As a newbie to the Las Vegas area, I find myself getting excited about things that most locals have a “been there, done that” stance about. I get it! Having lived in some of the most tourist dense towns and cities in the US, I understand when what once seemed cool is now “meh”. But Hemenway Valley Park in Boulder City deserves our awe. Not only will you be surprised at its size (10 acres) with gazebos, basketball and tennis ball courts, 2 lighted softball fields and horseshoe pits you will find the park to have something for everyone! Especially the animal lover in your family!

IMG_0084

I heard about Hemenway Valley Park from a local animal enthusiast who said he frequents the area during lunch time so he can sit under a shaded tree and enjoy the amazing views of Lake Mead and watch the River Mountain Big Horned Sheep graze. I was skeptical at first, thinking the animals would be elusive or shy. We would probably drive all the way there and not see a single sheep… but I was wrong. As we pulled into the parking lot we immediately saw around 20 massive Big horned Sheep resting and grazing within feet from the children playing at the playground. My kids weren’t sure what they wanted to do first, see the animals or play! Since they couldn’t touch the animals, they gave in to their energized bodies and ran happily to the playground but kept a watchful eye on the wildlife.

IMG_0091

The playground is so/so compared to some of Las Vegas’s extravagant parks, but the views are unmatched. Lake Mead boasts as you push your child on the swing, the mountains offer an awe-inspiring backdrop as the children take turns on the slide and the Sheep, of course, offer a million different photo-ops as you attempt to get them in a picture with your child, the playground AND Lake Mead, which is possible; see picture below:

IMG_0085

Whether you’re on your way to take guests to experience Hoover Dam, visiting Boulder City for some antique shopping or just want to breathe in the fresh mountain air, make Hemenway Valley Park a destination and you will NOT be disappointed.

Connecting with Family to Family Connections

45239_143737908992087_916307_n-2

45239_143737908992087_916307_n-2Hi Moms! Are you looking for something to do with your kids 0-5 years old?! Are you looking for helpful resources? I can’t count how many times I did Google searches, Facebook searches and meetup searches. I was always looking for activities or classes to take my son to. Since he’s an only child, I kept hearing my friends and family say, “You should make some mommy friends so your son can interact with other children.”12992072_1149997478366120_1446597005_n-2

When I first moved out here I didn’t need to worry so much about making friends with other moms. I was constantly traveling back and forth to CA to visit my friends and family so my son was okay. He was getting all kinds of human interaction. Or so I thought! After a while, the constant road trips started taking their toll. I was getting burned out driving constantly: Some family members that I visit moved a little farther away so visiting everyone became harder. Plus, I started to miss staying at my own house here in Nevada. Eventually I decided to give Nevada a chance to grow on me. I started to do my research looking for ideal places to take my son.20151013_112524

I found a lot of awesome places to go but they lacked social interaction for my son. I eventually enrolled him in an indoor play area. We were content for a couple of months, but I just didn’t see my son utilizing any of the equipment or lessons they were teaching. He also started to get bored and do his own thing by himself. I thought to myself, “Wow this an expensive hangout.” I also wasn’t making any friends there; All of the mommies there were either nannies or already split off into groups. None of them were inviting new members so I just kept to myself and played with my son. I decided to end my membership and try Rec Center Classes, which was great and they had a variety of classes available, but after a while the mommy and me classes were scarce.  12986587_1149997868366081_1934384035_o-2

Next, I tried to enroll my son in some independent classes and it never worked out: He had major separation anxiety and teachers didn’t want to waste the limited amount of time comforting him. Back to the computer it was and I did more research to find things to do. I am not sure how I stumbled upon Family to Family Connection, but boy was I happy I did. They have an awesome group of ladies working there who are so helpful and understanding. They are very patient with my son and the classession are great.

Please visit their website and check out their monthly calendar. You just may find the perfect for you too!

Hey Mommies! I have to tell you about the amazing time I had on the Voodoo Zipline at the Rio. It was a blast! You soar through the air at 33 miles per hour and 450+ feet in the air. You start from the highest tower and soar down to the lower one and I swear at one point I didn’t know if we were going to stop. I took my dad because he is my thrill-seeking buddy and the only one who would dare ride with me. It wasn’t scary at all, in fact it was totally opposite. After you zoom down to the lower tower you are whisked almost as quickly backwards to the higher one again. It is a great activity for everyone in the family as long as you are 48″ or taller! The ride is open from noon until midnight, seven days a week. After 8pm it is only 21 and over because you are also granted access to the nightclub as well. This would be a great deal for a date night or mommies night out! If anyone would like to come watch and cheer you on, there is a viewing area on the 51st floor. My mom and little one were able to scream, cheer and take pictures from there.  Make sure to also bring your ID with you to be able to ride.
