From Wine to Whey- Lifetime Athletic Clubs in Las Vegas

imagesWhen one thinks of “the gym” one usually thinks of bulky muscles, grunting noises, machines that look like torture devices and the ever dreaded membership sales personnel stalking your every move. One does not usually associate a gym to have a wine tasting night complete with chocolate dipped strawberries, 6 different wines to taste and an array of food pairings from their very own cafe. At least, that’s not what I expected upon walking in to Lifetime Athletic Club’s Green Valley location for their first ever Wine Tasting Event. IMG_7333

IMG_7331

IMG_7330Last month, Cindy  and I were contacted to attend what we hope is the first of many wine tasting events offered to members and non-members. The wine was great and so was the food, don’t get me wrong, but what we enjoyed the most was being able to drop our kids off at the AMAZING Kids Academy during the entire event! The kids played sports activities, made arts and crafts, ate pizza, went swimming (or not) and watched a movie. We were hooked.

This led to a conversation with the Events Manager and Kids Academy Director about all the amazing things Lifetime offers to members with children and even the amazing care for non-members coming in for open events! Cindy and I could not have been more impressed. Each care provider is certified and are experts in the field of play time and early childhood education. The Kids Academy play areas and teaching rooms are clean, fun and sufficiently supervised.

Summer Camps/School Breaks

expanding_our_teamI liked what I saw so much that I went to the nearest Lifetime location in Summerlin and decided to become a member! My boys and I have gone every single day since becoming members and we LOVE it. I love that I can drop my boys off knowing they not only are being supervised but are being taught about nutrition and exercise. The Kids Academy offers Children of Members classes like Yoga, Zumba, Karate and sports, while Mommas and Poppas focus on their health and wellness. As a stay at home Mom with a PPD background and an ever growing midsection, this decision to become a Lifetime Member has been nothing short of life-saving.images-7

As part of my sign-on package I had a free consultation with a nutritionist, personal trainer and Pilates Reform instructor. Each one has given me life altering information that I can take with me for the rest of my days. I’m learning how to focus more on sleep, stress management and nutrition as well as how to effectively exercise. I also learned what the heck “Whey” is and its become my new best friend, even over wine! Because of all this, my doctor is confident that as I loose weight and burn fat, I will likely be able to naturally manage my symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as keep my higher glucose levels in the low end.  In just over a week I have lost 2 pounds and gained more lean muscle mass. I have begun taking daily multi-vitamins for overall health and wellness as well as Omega 3 Supplements to help gut inflammation. I feel great and eager to meet my goals. main-bucket-academy-classes-800x800

So whether you are looking to finally put your New Years’ Resolution to good use, are looking to meet new people and partake in some family friendly events or you’re from out of town and need to work off a buffet binge and late nights at club, consider a gym!

Gift Guide and Bucket List of Our Favorite Holiday Things

Tis the season…We put together a list of our favorite places, products and services from stocking stuffers to bucket list events around town. Happy Shopping and Socializing, mamas!

Gifts for your #1 mom (Yes, YOU!)

Vent Salon also has 2 locations also: Downtown Summerlin and Henderson 3 blowouts per month runs about $55/month. Look Style Society has 2 locations in the Valley – Tivoli Village and Town Square. They offer unlimited blowouts for $99/month and unlimited makeup application for $99/month!

For furry babies: Barking Dogs on Blue Diamond has a great selection of treats and toys to reward your pets after you have them groomed or just do the self wash option. I love the friendly, resourceful staff here and the products are top notch.

I have worn the same lipstick for probably the entire time I’ve lived in Las Vegas (since 2003!) It’s called Stay Currant and it’s a Revlon Colorstay lip stain. I know, the drug store under $10 choice for the win! I’ve tried other brands, other shades, but this is my absolute go to – fancy or casual, day or night, summer or winter. I love this deep red and the fact that it lasts all day & even into some mornings – Lol! Just remember to pick up Neutrogena make up remover too (or the Up & Up Target brand works just as well for half the price) or the fancy Bifacil by Lancôme. They all take off lip stains with minimal effort.

Tervis cups are my new jam. They have been around forever, are super sturdy and incredibly stylish. I love drinking just about everything out of them! There is a Tervis store at PH’s Miracle Mile Shops, but they are also available at Macy’s and Bed, Bath & Beyond(home of the never expiring 20% off coupons!). You can rep your favorite sports teams or choose fun festive designs. With an active, bull-in-a-china-shop toddler you need to be ready for the next foul ball or rogue plane. We also have pets so cleaning up broken glass is too much of a risk!

Speaking of drinks… The good folks at Total Wine can help you find great wine and spirits to fit any occasion. They carry much, much more than simply wine! There is beer and cordials and hard alcohol as well as unique accessories and paraphernalia to make any wine connoisseur squeal.

Comfort food from Yardbird Southern is a cozy way to spend time connecting with your honey amidst the craziness of the holidays. When it’s cold out, rich foods are the way to go! We need to get our winter coats on – What else will we have to work off in the New Year?! Mandarin Oriental has a festive high tea as well. Start your new tradition today!

Brunch at Craft Kitchen, tea and multiple menu offerings at Truffles N Bacon, Filipino gastropub from Cutting Board & anything from Served LV and now at Americana… These are a handful of favorites around town for taking friends to share a unique experience that will give them something new to try or just make every day meals feel like a special occasion.

I love Hobby Lobby and Michaels for easy DIY kits from ornaments to toys, but the unique finds will be at Cost Plus World Market! Our elf even shops there!

There are 2 indoor playgrounds that we absolutely love (warning, sock zone!): Rockin Jump the trampoline gym is fantastic for the whole family so definitely head over when you have restless visitors in town. Super clean, open warehouse style, a stunt bag, dodge ball courts, a climbing tower, basketball hoops of varying heights, lockers and great music playing. For kids 10 years and younger, go to Kangamoo. You will not be disappointed! You could literally be there all day, they have a walking track, slides, swings, trampolines, a zip line, miles of crawl space, free massage chairs, free coffee, tea and water, a charging station and plenty of wifi.

Sharing experiences and quality time with loved ones is really what the holidays are all about. There are several notable seasonal events and attractions around town. You can never go wrong with Opportunity Village’s Magical Forest where there are so many local sponsors who are annual contributors. The trees are ever changing and can be a constant inspiration for your own home decorations. New to the Valley is Operation North Pole: an interactive experience with our favorite jolly couple! This includes photo opps, visiting the candy shoppe, the toy workshop, and one on one time with Mr. & Mrs. Claus! Make it a point to visit seasonal exhibits at Bellagio, Venetian and now The Park for festive gatherings and holiday decorations. Ice skating is always a fun family night too at Downtown Summerlin, Cosmopolitan and also The Park now too! There are also several homes decked out in Christmas Lights with synchronized music too! Hypnotist Marc Savard’s home on East Robindale is for sure a local favorite. The schedule for House on Robindale can be found on Facebook. If you want to stay in your car, try the Glittering Lights at the Speedway! They have Groupons and deals for bringing canned goods too.

Great shows to see anytime, but going to shows is more festive during the holidays: Terry Fator at Mirage, Jabbawockeez at MGM, and Absinthe at the theater in front of Ceasar’s (<–Absinthe is NOT for suitable for kids! …or anyone easily offended by vulgar language and suggestive content).

Dating My Man in Las Vegas

Las Vegas Locals, Date Night, The Strip

Las Vegas locals, date nightDespite what people might think, this town is awesome for happily married couples! When living in Las Vegas you can never run out of things to do. There are some of the best restaurants in the whole country in Vegas and some of the best shows too!

Date Night, Las Vegas LocalsWhen my husband and I decide to go on a date the hardest part is narrowing our choices down.  Some of my favorite upscale restaurants in Vegas are La Cave, STK, and the SW steakhouse. STK is perfect for a more fun lively evening. They have great music blasting and the food is amazing! La Cave is a little more laid back but perfect for a more romantic, sexy evening, my favorite time of the year to go there is during the summer when I can sit out on the patio. Lastly, the SW steakhouse isLas Vegas Locals, Date Night, The Strip extremely elegant and perfect for an anniversary. The food is perfection and it is as fancy as it gets! Now if you are not looking to take out a second mortgage to pay for your dinner there are lots of other super fun dates to go on here in Vegas. At New York New York there is a dueling piano bar, one of my most favorite dates was spent singing the night away with a crowd of people. Also we have hilarious hypnotist shows! If you have never been to one of these shows I swear you will laugh so hard you will wish you were wearing Depends because you might just pee your pants! These shows are definitely very adult themed, so be warned. Another great thing to do is play tourist: It is actually so fun to walk the Strip buy a giant guitar-shaped beer slingy thing and wander in and out of the casinos. And don’t forget to stop by the Carnival Fun Mom, Date Night, Las VegasCourtyard to hear one of their live bands. Oh and if you check out Groupon there are always deals on some of the shows. most of the time you can find the show Rock Vault on Groupon. If you love classic rock you will love this show. It’s kind of like being transported back in time and going to an awesome classic rock concert. Tony and Tina’s Wedding is usually on Groupon too! Every time I go to that show I have a blast! It’s just like going to a wedding reception and you are one of the guests, but pretty much everything goes wrong and you get to be right in the middle of all of it! Oh and with your ticket you get dinner too. Las Vegas Moms, Las Vegas Dads, Date NightThese are just a few of the fun nights you can have out with your man or woman. I look forward to posting about more of my favorite places . What are some of your favorite place to go on a date here in Las Vegas?

One of my challenges raising multiples

tripletsI have loads of challenges raising triplets. But it seems that one thing is always in the forefront of my mind more than anything else and that I am always trying to be fair. I am forever trying to make sure that every kid has a equal amount of everything. For example if I bend down to give one kid a kiss in my mind I need to seek out the other two and give them a kiss too. One of the biggest matching siblingsreasons I dress my girls the same is I am worried that one girl’s outfit is cuter than their sister’s. This all is so silly but I really can’t help it! When I first found out I was having triplets it was one of my biggest concerns and now to this day it is something I still pay a lot of attention to.  The hard part is that each child is so different – they require a different amount of attention. One of my girls spends her whole day by my side, while the other girl likes having her independence and do her own thing. Then the fair police in me feels guilty because I feel like they are not getting an equal amount of attention. I guess deep down inside I just want them all to grow up feeling so loved. I never want them to ever compare themselves to each other or feel like one is worse or better than the other. The crazy part is, I used to think it would be impossible to give a lot of attention to 5 kids but the reality is it’s not. All I have to do is make it a priority to be available to my kids. This might mean less me time or time with my friends but in the end my children are the people I want to invest in. I am actually IMG_8250lucky because my husband shares these same feelings with me. He is always trying his best to be fair too! I am thankful he always has this on his mind or it would probably bother me if I saw him giving one child more attention than another. Also all his free time is dedicated to his family. He has to work 6 days a week so all of his time away from work is spent with his family. He has put aside all hobbies and time with his friends and makes his kids the only thing he invest his time in. It definitely is nice for me that we are on the same page when if comes to our priorities and that we share the same concerns and goals for our family.IMG_8248

Do you have these same concerns abour fairness? Or do you worry about giving equal attention, gifts, time, to your children? Comment and let us know.

Lebron Who? Three People in Your Life Who Might Want to Know About “King James”

BOSTON CELTICS V CLEVELAND CAVALIERS, GAME 4

BOSTON CELTICS V CLEVELAND CAVALIERS, GAME 4

Lebron James is a basketball player who was formerly with the  Miami Heat team – now once again Cleveland Cavalier. He is also a four-time MVP of the NBA. James made a formal statement on July 11 to return to his Home state of Ohio in a very controversial free-agency decision. He has been the topic of conversation for any male interested in sports for the past two days. So, ladies – even if you are not the biggest sports fan, there is definitely motivation for you to investigate the buzz.

#1 Your significant other: This is like Grey’s Anatomy but for our male counterpart – Men will not admit it but they get as worked up about drama as women. Just remember how shocked you were when you found out that Weber had a love child with Meredith’s mom?? So this is a great time to attempt to take interest. Maybe he might return the favor.

#2 Your son: If you don’t have a son – sorry you are only getting two reasons out of this blog. -_-

For those of us that do… There is a high percentage that he likes basketball. Especially if dad does. This could totally be a topic of conversation for all three of you if you’re game. You can be the cool mom if you have an idea of who Lebron James is and a few fun little facts.

double JEN#3 You: I promise there is an actual valuable life lesson in all this. Potentially better than any Lifetime movie.

There is an undeniable destiny element that is so cosmically beautiful that you won’t even care you’re not interested in basketball.  I highly recommend you read James’ letter:  http://www.si.com/nba/2014/07/11/lebron-james-cleveland-cavaliers This was his formal announcement to the world. It is a vivid, genuine testament of his thoughts and struggle with this whole ordeal. It also give you the ammo needed to have those conversations with your boys. In the letter, he is essentially apologizing for leaving his city to play for another team. (This can also be tied into a loyalty lesson with your kids) Oh! And who doesn’t love a man that says I am sorry? And on a social platform to the world? (virtual high fives all around!)

The whole situation and letter not only gives you insight to one of the world’s greatest athletes but a vulnerable man. And I think we all can appreciate that. And also use some positive and uplifting media attention… no matter the source.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

Grandpa Always Makes Me Smile

Dear Dad,

GrandpaJust wanted to say Thank You for being such a wonderful dad. You have always taught me lessons without saying a word. You taught me how to be there for someone you love and what type of man makes a great husband and a great father. You have always provided for our family and always persevered. You showed me the importance of a good work ethic & though you worked long hours up until the time you retired, you demonstrated to me that being happy in your profession can make your entire life turn around. You always have a corny joke or comment for any occasion and though you are not about being the life of the party, our friends and family always gravitate towards you.

I could always count on you, Dad & despite the crazy teenager (& 20-something year old …& 30-something year old) you had to endure, you are still there for me to this day: Fixing things in your crazy McGuyver kind of way, handling things like – the guys at the auto shop, disciplining me which at my age is really considered ‘coaching’. You still insist on double-checking locked doors at night, emptying the trash, carrying heavy items and you are kind enough to not let your eyes glaze over (or fall asleep) when I talk about things that you don’t really have any interest! I’m so grateful for all these gifts you’ve given me. Now, more importantly, for being the best Lolo (Grandpa) ever! I am not sure if you would agree, but maybe all the drama I put you through was so that you could enjoy your first grandbaby! By the looks of it, it was all worth it!

 Lolo & apo 49ers

When J was born, mom teased that you didn’t even know how to hold a baby. Well, let’s face it, the last newborn you held was nearly 40 years ago…You kept asking him why he couldn’t talk & if he was ready to walk. Yes, he could see your face, Dad. But he’s not even First haircut from Grandpaone month old, so you have to be patient! I got to watch you become the modern day Dad: acting goofy, making faces, getting on the floor to play. Things Mom says you never did with my brother and me when we were kids. I’ve never seen you act this way with other kids in our family! You are always sweet to my girl cousins because you feel like little girls need to be babied and treated with extra special care. You have had a special bond with them in that way, like little princesses to dote on and watch over. With J it’s different: You actually can’t wait to see each other. You crack each other up. You guys are best friends. Even though J is just learning to talk now, he asks for you. He looks for you when you are not around. He screams at the top of his lungs when he finally gets to see you!

You’re the Best Dad & Grandfather ever! I love you, Dad!!!

Dads, Daughters, Father's Day

Salamat po (Thank you) Dad

Salamat Po, Tatay

IMG_12382644396343Dear Tatay (Dad in Tagalog, national filipino dialect),

We might not have the typical daughter father relationship but I do cherish our bond that we have and want you to know how much you are appreciated this Father’s Day and everyday.

Thank you for always being there for me no matter what and always having my back even when I might have been wrong at certain times. (Lol not gonna divulge this info)

Thank you for always listening to what I have to say even though I can be repetitive. It’s always comforting to know I can count on you a phone call away.

Thank you for teaching me how to play basketball, sing karaoke (lol Calendar Girl song is still ringing in my ears), drive a car young, save my money, be thrifty, make good deals, be on time (I was always on time before I had kids), cook random dishes with whatever ingredients we had in the refrigerator/pantry, and always smile at any situation. These skills are instilled in my everyday life because it allows me to appreciate the little things in life and not having to keep up with the Joneses but building a strong family foundation and good nest egg for my family and future.

Thank you for always hustling and making sacrifices for our family growing up. This trait helped me always to be a hustler (hard worker) no matter what I’m doing from being a working mama, stay at home mama, working at home mama. I love striving to be the best for my family.

Thank you for teaching me how to speak tagalog, even though I can’t speak it fluently I can still comprehend so it’s nice to be able to respond to other Filipinos/Filipinas. Haha sometimes it gives me upgrades and discounts when I speak tagalog (another saving tip).

Thank you for always being chill, cool, calm, collected and not sweating the small stuff when there is any negativity surrounding you. You helped teach me to just choose to be happy and not over think situations because life is too short to not want to focus on all the positive there is.

I’m very grateful to have a father like you and proud to have you as my father and wish you a Happy Father’s Day.

Love,
Mari

Stuff My Dad Says

What seemed like my dad just playing tricks on me when I was little, now seems more like imparted wisdom for parenting…with a sarcastic twist. I find myself as a parent laughing at situations others wouldn’t, making jokes and getting my kids to think about it and come to their own conclusions.
Maybe the gift of laughter is not just a coping mechanism but the better way to see the brighter side of life. Maybe in the long run being serious is not as important as enjoying the people you are with, maybe being right isn’t as important as raising children to think for themselves.
Where to start?…. I am in the backseat with my twin sister, windows rolled down, hair blowing in the breeze when we come to a stop light. My father gently turns to look over his shoulder and say as rubs his bald head, “ you know girls, I stuck my head out the window when I was your age and it clear fell off.” My sister and I look in horror at each other and quit squirming around, sit up straight in our seat…. brilliant dad, I think my sis and I were scared of wind until we were 12. Then the absolute freedom at 13, you can stick your head in the wind and it won’t fall off!
My father had an aneurysm when my sister and I were almost 2, consequently it left a scar… my sister and I were arguing with my mother. My father speaks to us later before tucking us in and points to his head which has a dent and long scar. “You know girls…” points to his scar and says’ “This is what happened when I mouthed off to your mother, she hit me over the head with a frying pan.”
Not all of them were this serious, my father goes upstream instead of down that path of despair. At one time our father was a salesman for tractor equipment and thus would have to visit farmers. My sister and I would accompany him. On these road trips maybe to Montana or Idaho somewhere in the mountains You have to remember, this was the time before texting, apps, and facebook or instagram. We were Bored, yes with a capital B. Again looking over his shoulder he would say, “Hey girls,” pointing to the yellow sign to the right that says falling rock, “Look out for the little indian boy named Falling Rock.” To our utter disappointment there was never a little boy dressed in leather on the side of the road. But at least it took up one of the 9 hours.
Now skip to the road trip I am taking with my 3 boys driving from Nashville to spring break in Florida, it is two hours in, 3 squirmy worms. I say “Hey boys” looking over my right shoulder, “ If you go to sleep, it will make the car go faster.” They all squeeze their eyes shut and fall asleep only to wake up 100 hundred miles closer. ”Wow!” They are thrilled, and this worked a good few more long trips.
Then 2 of the 3 are fighting over a Spiderman toy and I pull them aside and put Spiderman on top of the fridge. “Spiderman is really misbehaving and I think he should go to timeout.”   The boys start talking about how to make Spidey share.
Happy Father’s Day, Dad – You make parenting so much more fun.
