May the Fourth be with YOU

starwars-featIs officially Star Wars Day as a day to celebrate Star Wars which was created by George Lucas. It is observed by fans young and old. Fans celebrate the day by re-watching the world-famous franchises movies or reading the comics.

The date was chosen for the easy pun on the catchphrase May the Force be with you. In the movies the phrase is used to wish an individual good luck and that they would have favor with The Force.Although this is not an official holiday it is still celebrated by many Star Wars fans across the world and who can blame them.

Even our family has grown to love the many adventures and wise words encouraged by the films.

The franchise was launched back in 1977 with Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, and quickly became a worldwide phenomenon branching out to release books, a television series, video games and comics.*

If your ever curious on what is The Best Way to Watch All The Star Wars Movies.  I definitley recommend reading this article to help you decide.

In celebration of May the Fourth, I purchased my son his first AT-AT. I did a lot of research and found Revell made some affordable Star Wars Kits.  At first I was discouraged by the age recommendation.  I decided to purchase it anyways with the intent of helping my son build the kits.  I am so glad I purchased the Kit. It was very easy to build and the instructions and quality of the product was great.  I plan on buying more kits to build with together with my son.

From Wine to Whey- Lifetime Athletic Clubs in Las Vegas

imagesWhen one thinks of “the gym” one usually thinks of bulky muscles, grunting noises, machines that look like torture devices and the ever dreaded membership sales personnel stalking your every move. One does not usually associate a gym to have a wine tasting night complete with chocolate dipped strawberries, 6 different wines to taste and an array of food pairings from their very own cafe. At least, that’s not what I expected upon walking in to Lifetime Athletic Club’s Green Valley location for their first ever Wine Tasting Event. IMG_7333

IMG_7331

IMG_7330Last month, Cindy  and I were contacted to attend what we hope is the first of many wine tasting events offered to members and non-members. The wine was great and so was the food, don’t get me wrong, but what we enjoyed the most was being able to drop our kids off at the AMAZING Kids Academy during the entire event! The kids played sports activities, made arts and crafts, ate pizza, went swimming (or not) and watched a movie. We were hooked.

This led to a conversation with the Events Manager and Kids Academy Director about all the amazing things Lifetime offers to members with children and even the amazing care for non-members coming in for open events! Cindy and I could not have been more impressed. Each care provider is certified and are experts in the field of play time and early childhood education. The Kids Academy play areas and teaching rooms are clean, fun and sufficiently supervised.

Summer Camps/School Breaks

expanding_our_teamI liked what I saw so much that I went to the nearest Lifetime location in Summerlin and decided to become a member! My boys and I have gone every single day since becoming members and we LOVE it. I love that I can drop my boys off knowing they not only are being supervised but are being taught about nutrition and exercise. The Kids Academy offers Children of Members classes like Yoga, Zumba, Karate and sports, while Mommas and Poppas focus on their health and wellness. As a stay at home Mom with a PPD background and an ever growing midsection, this decision to become a Lifetime Member has been nothing short of life-saving.images-7

As part of my sign-on package I had a free consultation with a nutritionist, personal trainer and Pilates Reform instructor. Each one has given me life altering information that I can take with me for the rest of my days. I’m learning how to focus more on sleep, stress management and nutrition as well as how to effectively exercise. I also learned what the heck “Whey” is and its become my new best friend, even over wine! Because of all this, my doctor is confident that as I loose weight and burn fat, I will likely be able to naturally manage my symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as keep my higher glucose levels in the low end.  In just over a week I have lost 2 pounds and gained more lean muscle mass. I have begun taking daily multi-vitamins for overall health and wellness as well as Omega 3 Supplements to help gut inflammation. I feel great and eager to meet my goals. main-bucket-academy-classes-800x800

So whether you are looking to finally put your New Years’ Resolution to good use, are looking to meet new people and partake in some family friendly events or you’re from out of town and need to work off a buffet binge and late nights at club, consider a gym!

The Fight of the Century: Pacquiao vs. Mayweather

Women, if it’s hard to understand our man’s fascination of this brutal sport just realize – it is their soap opera. The dramatic storyline that they get to sit around and gossip about with their friends.

This fight is the culmination of a long path of speculation and argument for the world’s greatest pound for pound fighter. And like any good novella, there are the two characters. From the utmost contrasting origins propelled two adversaries. Each with a belief in different deities. Manny’s faith lies in God while Mayweather believes in money.
The most intriguing truth about this sport is it reveals everything about the men that engage in it. There is no team but one sole individual. They live under a microscope and are constantly being watched. No one to rely on but themselves. And even if you are not a boxing fan, there are some factors of this epic match up that might interest you. There are things you may know about the upcoming mega fight between Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao that will take place this Saturday at the MGM Grand.

floyd_mayweather_manny_pacquiao_by_odotkrown_by_odotkrown-d8ictf4

This battle is 6 years in the making. Mayweather’s unblemished record of 47-0 suggests that he has a legitimate shot at breaking Rocky Marciano’s all-time mark of 49-0 which has stood since 1955. Pacquiao with a similar stellar record and equally effective fighting style.
Have you decided which camp you will be cheering for? It’s okay if you aren’t a professional analyst to decipher fighting styles and odds. How about we dissect the character and personalities of the two most popular modern day boxers.
Each man is flawed as humans are but the situation could not be better scripted if the best author tried. Pacquiao is our protagonist. He battled odds and escaped a poverty-stricken childhood to become a world-renowned athlete and political official in the Philippines. He is noted for his giving nature and a philanthropist. In the opposite corner, we have the villain. Mayweather who also had a degree of humbled beginnings, but his fall from grace is shadowed. He is a documented serial abuser of women. His calling card is flaunting and throwing his money and spewing condescending words for anyone to hear.
It seems like a minimal investment to watch the “Fight of the Century” But we are we really compromising here? Our allegiance for women. We are putting more money and glorifying a man that beats women.
Mayweather has a consistent record of abuse against women, going as far back as 2001. His rap sheet includes being arrested or cited seven times for violence against five different women. His main offense and only jail time served was in 2012 after a beating incident against Josie Harris, his former girlfriend and mother of three of his children.
Yes, this is the incident that according to the police report, Mayweather “grabbed Harris by her hair and began striking her in the back of her head several times with a closed fist”. And if not for their 11-year old son, Kuraun, the beating could have been worse. And how was he reprimanded? After striking a plea deal, Mayweather was sentenced to 90 days in jail and released after 60 for good behavior.

I am not saying to riot (its not getting Baltimore anywhere) But I think we all need to be educated on facts. No one involved in boxing is looking out for Mayweather’s victims. There is no red carpet or even a representative to voice defense for these women. No one cares. Sports in general can be known for a lack of a moral fabric and turning a blind eye to the athletes that misbehave. And definitely in regards to this fight, there is just way too much monetary interest to evade the allure of this battle.
I know I will be watching the fight this weekend because I am an avid sports fan and I am interested in what will happen. Maybe we can petition for Mayweather to give some of his pay to these women. And now I hope you can watch the fight with a heightened interest and a consciousness of what society builds and accepts.

Honoring a Vegas Hero

B9wjn1ZCAAQWQIu

When I was a young girl, my family and I used to frequent Las Vegas as a vacation destination. Ever since I could remember – I loved basketball and even in my youth I knew hoops history. Naturally, part of my attraction when coming to Las Vegas was seeing the Thomas & Mack center; home of the Runnin’ Rebels.

When I made my move in 2007 to attend UNLV, there was a sense of fulfillment. I had enrolled at a college that had been a dominant basketball dynasty. A program in my eyes that was very successful and respected. An empire built by Jerry Tarkanian. Attending UNLV, I got to absorb the glory that had been developed there. I was attending games, learning the chants and making myself an official Rebel.

I got a job as a sports reporter for the Rebel Yell school paper; was attending a luncheon for UNLV alumni. I got there super early and found a seat in the back. Shortly after, people began to file in. I can’t remember exactly how it happened but Coach Tarkanian took a seat beside mine. It was like a movie. He asked me who I was and when I replied I was a journalist for the college paper he introduced himself. I was in a complete dream state and lost for words. It’s still blurry because my heart was pounding and I never get star struck but I was so nervous that I snuck away to text James what was going on. I stood in the back of the room until the ceremony was over. And as I stood by myself, one of the first times since moving, I didn’t miss Texas.

Fast forward to last week; I heard of Coach’s passing, and my heart dropped. The iconic Coach Shark was responsible for putting Las Vegas hoops on the map undoubtedly and deserves an honoring gesture.

In an effort led by Tony Cordasco and Scott Gulbransen, there is a campaign named #DimLights4Tark to help with this. Participating casinos that usually have their beaming lights on will be dim momentarily to honor Tarkanian. The time is set today at 10:30 p.m., after the finish of UNLV’s home game against Boise State.

I couldn’t be more proud of being a Las Vegan today. A day that we are recognizing our local hero “Tark the Shark,” who was an embodiment of the spirit of this city. A true pioneer for basketball culture and has left his love of the game to resonate in all of our hearts.

Boo-Yah! Stuart Scott, You Will Be Missed

StuartScott1

A legend passed away this week. Mr. Stuart Scott is likely best known for being the face of SportsCenter and his one-of-a-kind way of delivering sports news. He was the voice of many a highlight reel even though it never occurred to me that his sportscasting style was ground-breaking or cutting edge.

http://www.xxlmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/stuart-scott.jpgHe became a part of the ESPN family more than 20 years ago…Stuart Scott’s handsome face and hilarious catch phrases were a permanent fixture in my home for many years. I decided it was all too depressing to always hear bad new, or about tragic accidents covered by the local or national news. I would much rather listen to who won what game, who beat the odds or broke records or who was being honored. Besides, if there was major news that affected the world, SportsCenter would cover it. It was my favorite show and Stuart Scott was easily my favorite sports anchor. I watched it repeatedly throughout the day: early mornings, late nights, afternoons, you name it – I had it on! My TV was my alarm clock and had a handy sleep timer so I literally watched it first thing in the morning and it was the last show on at night. To me, Stuart was funny and made watching news fun and interesting. He set up the highlight reels so you felt the excitement of actually being there. It was like hanging out with your friend who giving you a play by play of a game. At the time, I did not appreciate this for how out-of-the-box it was. I look back now not realizing Stuart Scott was just starting his career when I became an avid fan of his show. I just figured I was late to discover him! The fact that his familiar face was still there through the past two decades only validates my belief that news people just moved around from show to show. There was no retiring or quitting! Stuart is the kind of guy that I could see walking down the street one day and I would look at him and greet him like an old friend. Only I have never met him. Have you ever done that to a celebrity?! You recognize their face so you feel like you know them – So you say Hello! How have you been?! Like a neighbor come home from an extended vacation. That is the kind of impact he had on his audience. This is how I will remember him:

NYpost.com – Top 10 Stuart Scott SportsCenter Commercials

In recent years, he inspired so many friends, colleagues and otherwise complete strangers by his valiant battle with cancer. StuartScott1 http://theybf.com/2014/03/12/afternoon-inspiration-espn-analyst-stuart-scott-heroically-battles-cancer-for-the-thirdDiagnosed in 2007 and never wanted to know what stage his cancer was. He just resolved to fight. For his fans, for his family, for his two gorgeous daughters and his girlfriend. He was honored just a few months ago at the ESPY Awards, receiving the Jimmy V Perseverance Award. Watch the award presentation and his acceptance speech here. Please have tissues available…a lot of them.

My favorite quote from this speech (9:45), “When you die it does not mean that you lose to cancer, you beat cancer by how you live, why you live and in the manner in which you live.”
